Belize Customs is a member of the World Customs Organization (WCO)
On 28th April 2008 Belize became 173rd member of the World Customs Organization (WCO). On the 22nd April its “instrument of accession to the Convention establishing the Customs Cooperation Council” was submitted and Belize Customs was granted membership.
“World Customs Organization (WCO) is an intergovernmental organization that helps member states communicate and cooperate on customs issues. It was established in 1952 as the Customs Cooperation Council; it adopted its current name in 1994.
“Headquartered in Brussels, Belgium, it develops agreed rules on customs procedures and provides advice and assistance to customs services. It has established an international standard classification of commodities called the Harmonized Commodity Description and Coding System, which is used to classify goods for tariff purposes the application of tariffs.” (ECONOMIC expert.com)
Membership benefits include training, standardization of procedures, and having a voice in International Customs forums.
